I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns - finally. The book is gripping... and tough to read. I am in the year 1978 and already feel that life is only going to get worse by each year for Mariam. Yet I hope that somehow she will find peace and solace - and freedom from her oppressor. She is uneducated and young with no family support, and lives in a woman-hostile culture. A perfect victim for abuse. We all know that a nation will rise to economic and cultural prosperity only when its women and girls are educated and free. Afghanistan has a long way to go.
